CLASSICAL BALLET THEATRE PRESENTS ANNUAL PERFORMANCES OF THE NUTCRACKER
Herndon, Va., November 18, 2008-- Classical Ballet Theatre (CBT) brings The Nutcracker to life this year with principal roles danced by emerging young stars. CBT presents three performances to the general public on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at 2pm and 7:30pm, and Sunday, December 7, 2008, at 2pm. All performances take place at the Ernst Community Cultural Center Theatre, Northern Virginia Community College Annandale Campus, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, Virginia.
Classical Ballet Theatre, associated with the Classical Ballet Academy of Northern Virginia, provides pre-professional training and performing opportunities to young dancers in the Washington, DC metro region. Students are consistently invited to attend summer intensive programs at nationally acclaimed schools associated with such well-known companies as the San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey and the School of American Ballet. CBT graduates have joined the ranks of the Atlanta Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet and Richmond Ballet, among others. This year, Philip Smith-Cobbs who has danced at the Academy for 10 years will perform the lead role of Cavalier. He spent the last 2 summers with the Miami City Ballet. Leslie Corbett and Alexa Vasiliadis will perform
the role of Sugar Plum Fairy. Ms. Vasiliadis, a senior at Langley High School, was recently profiled in Hearing Loss magazine. She has overcome moderate hearing loss to become an accomplished artist. Miss Corbett also studied with the Miami City Ballet.
Tchaikovsky’s popular Nutcracker ballet music score, so familiar in America’s holiday season, was first performed in the United States in 1944 at the San Francisco Ballet. It was popularized in this country following George Balanchine's production at the New York City Ballet in 1954.
Classical Ballet Theatre has presented its beloved production of The Nutcracker for the past 10 years. Nell Fuson Hacker, CBT’s resident choreographer, and Alisher Saburov, associate artistic director, once again bring the production’s choreography to life. Mr. Saburov, a graduate of the Bolshoi Academy was a principal dancer with the Moscow Festival Ballet and the Kremlin Ballet prior to moving to the Northern Virginia region.
Refreshments and holiday souvenirs & gifts will be available before and after the show and during intermission.
