CVHS Field Hockey Begins 5-2

By ammacek

Centreville Varsity Field Hockey begins the 2008 season with a 5-2 record after two consecutive overtime victories. The overtime successes came on 9/2/08 and 9/3/08 with 2-1 wins against Thomas Jefferson and Marshall, respectively. The win against Marshall was particularly hard-earned, with a total of 14 shots on goal during regular play and an additional 7 shots on goal during the second 15-minute overtime.
Centreville started the season by taking 4th place (out of 10 teams) in the Bulldog Invitational Tournament with shut outs against West Springfield (2-0) and Edison (1-0), followed by losses against crosstown rival Chantilly (0-3) and South County (0-1). Centreville got back on a winning streak with a victory against Madison (2-1) with just 20 seconds remaining in the game, followed by the two overtime wins mentioned above.
Centreville's scoring has been accomplished through great teamwork: Haili Hartman (5 goals), Molly MacDonnell (2 goals), Susie Lesniewski (1 goal), and Alex Peterson (1 goal). On assists, Katie Russell and Susie Lesniewski have two each, while Stacey McCormack, Haili Hartman and Molly MacDonnell have one each. Strong defensive plays have been the norm for Vicky LaLiberte, Rachel Behne and Katy Kelly, while the Wildcat goalies have collaborated for an intimidating presence: Carolyn Macek (43 shots against, 90.7% save percentage), Betsy McCracken (14 shots against, 78.6% save percentage), and Maggie Montgomery (5 shots against, 100% save percentage).
Centreville will play its next two matches at home, 9/10 against Langley and 9/12 against McLean, before starting Concorde District play on 9/16 at Robinson. With speed, stamina and outstanding teamwork, this young group of Wildcats hopes to make its mark in this very competitive District.
