Exercise your right to vote

One of the nation's true privileges takes place Tuesday, Nov. 4, when it's time to go to the polls.

If you don't vote, you shouldn't complain. That's our opinion on the matter.

None of us has a direct vote in the U.S. Senate or House. Our only vote is for the people we believe will best represent us on those governmental bodies.

As far as the presidential race goes, Obama vs. McCain will go down in history. Will Virginia go Democratic for the first time since 1964? Will McCain overcome the label of underdog? We'll know soon.

The U.S. Senate race between Democrat Mark Warner and Republican Jim Gilmore is also noteworthy in that it pits two former Virginia governors who seem to disagree on everything from alternative energy options to the color of grass.

Fairfax voters will also be asked to send three candidates to the U.S. House of Representatives in the 8th, 10th and 11th districts. Perhaps the day's top storyline will involve incumbent Frank Wolf's (R-10th) ability to withstand an anti-GOP tidal wave that seems to be sweeping through the country.

In addition to voting for individual candidates, nearly 700,000 Fairfax voters will be asked to weigh in on an important park bond issue.

It may seem now is not the best time for Fairfax County to take on more debt to support our parks, given current budget projections, but we believe voters should still endorse the park bond that will be on this year's ballot.

Parks are a valuable resource for county residents and we would be remiss if we do not continue to protect that resource. Money from the park bond will provide millions to do major maintenance and create new amenities in our county and regional parks.

Good parks, like good schools, are a feature that improves quality of life here, making Fairfax County an attractive place to live and to locate a business. Support for the park bond now is an investment that will pay dividends over time.

Here's a great political satire website to help us through the last few hours of this interminable presidential race: http://fleetingmatters.wordpress.com/
