Search continues for missing police officer

The search continued Oct. 22 for a Fairfax County police officer who went missing the day before after participating in an underwater helicopter rescue exercise in Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton.

Fairfax County Police spokesperson Don Gotthardt said the training exercise began at around 1:30 p.m. Oct. 21 and his fellow officers "lost sight of him at around 2:45 p.m."

The Fairfax County Fire Department, along with several additional agencies, are participating in the search for the officer, described as wearing an "orange and black dive suit."

Boats and police helicopters searched throughout Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Federal Bureau of Investigation provided support and remained active in the search as of late morning Wednesday, using both radar and sonar equipment.

According to police, area fire departments are searching the Potomac River waters in the area.

As of Wednesday morning, police had not released the officer's name, but said he was 42 years old and has been with the department for 19 years.

The Fairfax County Police Department is asking anyone living near the water around the Pohick Bay area to remain observant and report any possible sightings of the missing officer to the police department by calling 703-691-2131.
