Three drivers killed in four days

Three fatal car crashes occurred within a four-day span last week in Fairfax County.

On Oct. 8 at 9:20 a.m., officers were called to the scene of a vehicle crash at the intersection of Lee Jackson Memorial Highway and Stonecroft Boulevard.

An investigation revealed that a privately owned trash truck heading westbound on Lee Jackson Memorial Highway struck a tractor-trailer.

The tractor- trailer was making a right turn at a red light from Stonecroft Boulevard onto westbound Lee Jackson Memorial Highway. The passenger in the trash truck, 38-year-old Zenon Sanches, of Woodbridge, was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Oct. 10 at 7:45 a.m., county officers were called to the scene of a second fatal vehicle crash in Centreville.

An investigation revealed that a 2002 Jaguar was traveling westbound on Braddock Road near Belle Pond Drive when the driver apparently lost control.

The vehicle crossed the eastbound lanes of Braddock Road, left the paved portion of the road and struck a fence. The Jaguar hit a shed before coming to rest.

The driver, Tiffany Dawne Degroft, 29, of 1444 Black Horse Court in Centreville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Degroft was alone in the vehicle.

Less than 24 hours later, officers were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash in the Reston area at 1:19 a.m on Saturday morning.

An investigation revealed that a 2004 Nissan Maxima was traveling westbound in the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive when the driver apparently lost control.

The vehicle ran up on the right curb, continued across the grass and struck a tree head on. The collision with the tree resulted in the vehicle landing on its roof with the driver trapped inside.

James Robert Hammer, 31, of Villaridge Drive in Reston, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hammer was alone in the vehicle.

An investigation is under way in all three cases, according to police spokesman Don Gotthard, who also said that there was no apparent reason for the three crashes occurring over the four-day period. "Fatalities so far this year are still around half of what they were last year at this time," he added.

The Sunrise Valley crash is the 17th fatal accident in Fairfax County this year. Last year at this time, there had been 35 fatal crashes.
