Bridge repairs continue on Springvale Road

The Virginia Department of Transportation expects to complete emergency repairs to the Springvale Road bridge over Piney Run by Oct. 17. The bridge has been closed to traffic since Sept. 16 after heavy rains from Tropical Storm Hanna washed away the ground surrounding the bridge abutments.

Sections of pavement leading up to the bridge must be reconstructed and the streambed underneath the bridge must be restored before the bridge can reopen,” said Nicholas Roper, VDOT bridge engineer.

In the last three weeks, the abutments have been stabilized and new footings were constructed.

We had to do much of the work by hand because of the tightly restricted space under the bridge,” Roper noted.

Springvale Road is between Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and Georgetown Pike (Route 193). Utterback Store Road is the detour route, which adds about 10 minutes to motorists’ travel time. Detour signs are posted.
