The following are some of the art exhibits taking place in the Fairfax-Loudoun area: 'Sleeping Tree.' Shinji Turner-Yamamoto's “Sleeping Tree” will be at the Greater Reston Arts Center, 12001 Market St., Suite 103, Oct. 10-Nov. 14.

There will be an opening reception Saturday, Oct. 11, 5-7 p.m. at GRACE.

Turner-Yamamoto is an environmental artist.

Portrait artist Judith Peck. Lofty Salon & Wellness Center, at 354 W. Maple Ave. in Vienna, will be the site for an art show opening and reception Oct. 16, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. featuring portrait artist Judith Peck. Light refreshments are available. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the paintings will benefit the Capital Hospice and the Breast Cancer Network of Strength (formerly Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization). Great Falls Art Studio Tour. The Great Falls Art Studio Tour takes place Oct. 18-19, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. This is a self-guided driving tour to visit 38 painters, potters, sculptors and other artists in home studios on scenic back roads in Great Falls. Many studios are inside barns, historic buildings or unusual houses. This is free. Reeb Hall Artists Open Studio. The Reeb Hall Artists Open Studio exhibit, featuring artists from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, will be Sunday, Oct. 19, 1-4 p.m., at Reeb Hall, 4451 First Place South, Arlington, near the intersection of U.S. 50, George Mason Drive. Peter Max exhibit. Peter Max will present his latest exhibit, “POP to Patriotism,” Oct. 25 with a special appearance at the Wentworth Gallery at both the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City (1100 S. Hayes St. in Arlington, 12-2 p.m.) and Tyson’s Galleria (1731 M International Drive, McLean, 6-9 p.m.).

Max has recently completed original portraits of the 2008 American presidential candidates, Sen. Barrack Obama and Sen. John McCain, and their wives. In addition to having painted for six U.S. presidents, in the 1970s, Max began a tradition in which he paints an original interpretation of the Statue of Liberty each July 4th.

Max’s retrospective in Virginia -- which features more than 150 pieces of his artwork, including original paintings available for purchase -- is open to the public and free of charge. The subject matter will include his well-known iconic patriotic paintings such as the “Statue of Liberty” and "Flag With Heart.”

Mogee, Remmers exhibit. An exhibit of new paintings and prints by Mary Ellen Mogee and Deborah Remmers are on exhibit at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1625 Wiehle Ave. in Reston, through Oct. 19.

The artworks deal with connections of many kinds and at many levels.

Call 703-742-7992.   'Invisible Forces' exhibit. An exhibit of the works of sculptor and landscape architect RG Brown III will run through Oct. 23 at George Mason University's Fine Arts Gallery on the Fairfax campus at the intersection of Braddock Road and Route 123. 

Brown, an associate professor of art at Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, created his first public installation, "Jamestown Triangle," as part of the East Coast Sculpture Exchange in March 2007. George Mason University's Art and Visual Technology department presents "Invisible Forces," displaying the images that were generated from the archaeological surveys of that installation.

This event is free. The gallery is open to the public on weekdays 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and weekends by appointment. Paid parking is in the deck adjacent to the mainstage Concert Hall. Visit www.gmu.edu/cfa.


MPA Exhibit. The McLean Project for the Arts announces an exhibit of the works of Jo Smail, Pat Goslee and Sangbok Lee at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Ave. It runs through Oct. 25.

Smail's exhibit, “The Limits of Language, Selected from Ten Years,” is in the Emerson Gallery and evokes a feeling of transition, both physical and metaphysical.

Goslee's exhibit, “memory/full,” is in the Atrium Gallery and features multiple layers, textures, colors and movement to reflect the natural world and the free flowing of nature.

Lee's exhibit, “Contemplation on Nature,” is in the Ramp Gallery and explores both nature and the nature of contemplation.

Scope Gallery. The Scope Gallery, in the Torpedo Factory, 105 N. Union St. in Alexandria, announces its exhibit “Views From Nature,” with works by members of the Ceramic Guild. The exhibit runs through Oct. 26 and features clay creations and decorations inspired by the living world. Scope's hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays. Call 703-838-4565.


Judged photography exhibition. On view through Oct. 27 at the Jo Anne Rose Gallery, Reston Community Center, Lake Anne Village Center. Open daily. Call 703-476-4500.


Werder photography exhibit. The photographs of Northern Northern Virginia photographer Lillis Werder are on exhibit at Washington Dulles International Airport through December. Two series of works by the artist are on display, on the themes of Washington, D.C., War Memorials and Venice, Italy.

The exhibit, coordinated by Gallery 222 and the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority, is the fifth in the program's rotating series of displays. The photographs are installed in the area beyond the security checkpoints in the Main Terminal on the Arrivals Level.  Werder specializes in European architecture, landscapes, open-air markets, animals, florals and historic sites near her home in Northern Virginia.

ArtSpace Herndon. The ArtSpace Invitational runs through Nov. 2, 10 a.m-2 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sunday at 750 Center St., adjacent to the Fortnightly Library and bike trail in downtown Herndon.

More than 28 artists with two- and three-dimensional works will take part. Working in collage, oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, clay, wood, printmaking and mixed or experimental media, these artists offer images ranging from traditional to edgy.

Lyndia Terre etchings. “Connections,” an exhibition featuring the etchings of Lyndia Terre, continues now through Nov. 30 at Huntley Meadows Park Visitor Center, 3701 Lockheed Blvd., Alexandria. Terre’s etchings capture the intricate designs of the park’s wetlands. Sale of the art will benefit the park and the memorial group Becca’s Ark, which supports the care of abandoned and feral pets. 703-768-2525.


Soldwedel sculpture. An exhibition of work by sculptor Pamela Soldwedel will continue through Jan. 2 at The Corporate Centre at Tysons II in the sculpture atrium, 1600 Tysons Boulevard.
