Fatal motorcycle crash in Fairfax

A 66-year-old Fairfax County man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding struck another vehicle and he was ejected.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Nov. 12, a 38-year-old Fairfax County woman was operating her 2004 Nissan minivan westbound on Legato Road. The Nissan apparently failed to stop at a red traffic signal and proceeded into the intersection of Lee Highway, where it struck a 2000 Acura sedan, driven by a 25-year-old Fairfax County man, heading south.

A 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle was also southbound on Lee Highway near Legato Road. The rider of the motorcycle attempted to avoid the first crash, but was not able to do so before striking the 2004 Nissan. The rider was ejected.

The drivers of the Nissan and the Acura were transported by ground to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The motorcycle rider was transported by medevac helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. Richard L.Whitenton, 66, of 11634 Leehigh Drive, was pronounced dead at approximately 10:45 a.m.

According to police, speed and alcohol were not factors in this crash. The investigation is ongoing.

This is the 21st fatal crash in Fairfax County in 2008. At this time last year, there had been 38 fatal crashes, resulting in 43 deaths in the county.
