Median improved safety at intersection
Construction of a controversial median on Route 28 has reduced the number of accidents at its intersection by 31 percent, according to a recent study by the Virginia Department of Transportation.Prior to the median, there was an average of 104 crashes a year for the past three years near the intersection of Walney and Braddock roads, Route 28 and the nearby Interstate 66, according to the study.
Nine months after the Virginia Department of Transportation completed work in the area, accidents have decreased about 31 percent.
“We're pleased with both the traffic operations and the safety results so far,” said Randy Dittbener, a VDOT traffic engineer.
Dozens of Centreville citizens opposed the project during several public meetings before Sully District Supervisor Michael Frey (R) finally gave VDOT the go-ahead for the project. Residents were concerned the change would isolate neighborhoods on either side of Route 28 and increase cut-through traffic.
The $200,000 project consisted of a median dividing Route 28 where Walney and Braddock roads crossed it. VDOT also closed ramps from northbound Route 28 to westbound Interstate 66 and from eastbound Interstate 66 to Route 28, increasing the length of the green light there.
VDOT staff argued the changes would decrease the number of accidents in the area.
Frey said he approved the project for safety reasons.
