Sterling Sheriff’s Substation Groundbreaking

The County Celebrates Sterling Sheriff’s Substation Groundbreaking on 6 November

Local Residents Feel Sense of Relief as Long Awaited Sheriff’s Facility Gets Underway

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Loudoun County Office of Capital Construction hosted a public input session for the Sterling Sheriff’s Substation Project way back on June 4, 2007 at Rolling Ridge Elementary School. The input session included a presentation and design sketches by the architectural firm Ballou, Justice, Upton.  Although there was some minor opposition to the site selected for the facility (between Briar Patch Park and Rolling Ridge Elementary School), local residents quickly came to the realization that the Sheriff' Substation would be a welcome addition to the Sterling area.  There was ongoing dialogue among the sheriff's office, the county and local residents, who took part in an advisory committee.  All who attended the early meetings agreed the design and architectural renderings had a type of library/community center feel for the area.   Sterling residents feel a sense of relief as the long awaited Sheriff’s Substation gets underway.

The land for the Sterling Station was transferred from Loudoun County Public Schools to the county so it could construct the facility. The Loudoun County School Board had to subdivide the Rolling Ridge property to allow for the construction.

On Thursday afternoon, November 6 with gray skies, in a light rain and drizzle,
local county supervisors, public school officials, sheriff’s personnel and about 20 residents gathered in the field next to Rolling Ridge Elementary School Thursday to break ground on the Sterling Sheriff’s Substation on East Fredrick Drive in Sterling.

The 18,000-square-foot facility located adjacent to Rolling Ridge Elementary School on East Frederick Drive will serve as the eastern Loudoun headquarters for the sheriff's office, with deputies and administration working out of the facility, eliminating the need to transport arrested parties to the jail in Leesburg and allowing the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office to have an even larger much needed presence in the Sterling area.  The facility will provide patrol, crime prevention, and other law enforcement services to the Sterling area. The facility will house staff offices, a community room, deputy work rooms and temporary prisoner-holding facilities. The community room would also provide a venue for community meetings easily accessible from Sterling Boulevard.  The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office will provide coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week under the command of Captain Ricky Frye.

Sterling Sheriff's Substation

The Sterling substation will be the second fully operational substation outside of Leesburg. The Dulles South public safety station, where the sheriff's office shares space with Loudoun fire-rescue, opened in 2007.  There are also plans to open a station in Ashburn and a fourth station in western Loudoun.  County planning staff said county policy calls for one substation for every 75,000 Loudoun residents, a need that is currently not being met.

The project should be completed within 12 to 15 months, Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said, and a move-in date is set for January 2010.
